I can attest to how hard it is to find a simple, good slice of chocolate cake in NYC. I went in search of one last year, for MK's birthday, and came away empty-handed. Thank goodness for chocolate mice!
William Greenberg Bakery, Madison Ave was where the special occasion chocolate cakes were sourced for my family back in the day. You knew something was worth celebrating if we got Greenberg’s. I wonder if they do by the slice?
It is so Astoria that it's the Sicilian bakery that makes the best Greek mice. The mixing and influence of different cultures is what makes the neighborhood special.
I have certainly seen these mouse cakes around, but had no idea the story behind them. I can be severely tested to explain why I love my country, but I surely do love our melting pot.
The only good things these days come independent businesses and the "little people," where big money hasn't entered the question and corrupted all motivations. This is what we write about here.
I need to visit more bakeries with Akiko and keep my eyes open — as long as I’ve lived in Astoria, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed these little guys! Probably because we tend to hit the Italian spots (though not La Guli, for some reason) and Akiko is cream-focused, haha. This requires further investigation.
Oh, and I’ll send you my great-grandmother’s chocolate cake recipe, and y’all can test it out in that new kitchen of yours : ) Simple, dense, and delicious, and it probably dates from the 1920s-30s. It was a staple in my Grandma Gantz’s house, and Mom always made it for my birthday.

Yum. This is an excellent tip. Will report back.

Astoria is a very New York neighborhood in terms of culinary diversity.
I thought that too, but I have yet to try the ones in Athens!! 😁

Me too. It was fun to look into this!

And making it!
Thanks! Looking forward to seeing it.
