It's not a sandwich for everyone. After that weekend, I was sure I didn't ever want to see another North Shore Beef every again. HOWEVER, lately, I've been hankering for one again! I think it's a once in a while thing. And I definitely think, next time, I'd opt for the Junior size.
Correction! Bill and Bob’s started I. 1962 by Billy Alyward and Bob Carter. Their first shop was on Franklin Street in Lynn, MA. They opened a second on Boston Street across from the Northshore Sports Center in Lynn and their most famous was on the Lynnway in Lynn, MA which was on the waterfront and became a late night hangout for young people in the greater Lynn area. I do believe they own the title for the first Northshore Roast Beef joint!
When I went to college in Boston over two decades ago, there was a remarkable late night, local, fast food joint called Buzzys, in Charles Circle, just over the Longfellow Bridge, that served thinly sliced roast beef slathered in sauce. I dont know if it was cheesed or mayo'd. Would this have counted as a NSB? Do any other former Bostonians recall Buzzys? It was delightful.
Buzzy's was Jay Leno's favorite late night stop long ago. I used to eat lunch there often when I worked in nearby Government Center - just a 5 minute walk. I would absolutely say that their roast beef sandwiches were NSB, although you could order them any way you pleased. They closed about 20 years ago - oh how I miss those sandwiches!
That would make sense, as both Jay and I are (somewhat reluctant) alumni of Emerson College! (OK, truth be told I cant be sure Jay is a reluctant alumni… 🤣)
It also had thinly sliced white onions draped all over the beef. Maybe too many differentials to be considered an NSB. Anyways, Buzzys was demolished over a year ago to make way for lux condos, obviously. I miss it.
As much as I enjoy your cocktail writing, these deep dives into regional foods are quickly becoming my favorite part of your newsletter. The only problem is I'm now craving a sandwich there's a strong chance I'll never get to try! Unless there are any purveyors of NSB in the NYC area...
I just can’t get “beefslide” out of my head. 🥩🛝
That was a Stevie Nicks song that got cut from the "Fleetwood Mac" album.
I ate the beef, I scarfed it down
It looked like a mountain as I bit all around
I saw my reflection in the James River Sauce
Then the beefslide brought me down
A delightful deep dive. I can’t say it left me exactly desiring one of these sandwiches, but I now feel quite well briefed!

I don’t know. I’ve been told there are no NSB to be had in Boston. But don’t know for sure.

Thank you! I certainly enjoy doing them and I expect that come through.
