Iβm in Portland this week on a family vacation. I just returned from John Helmer, a long running hat shop, where I bought a new summer hat. Nothing fancy. A Bailey with a stingy brim.
Iβm right behind ya - 7 5/8. Salmagundi in Boston (2 locations) is excellent. Havenβt been to Troncarelliβ¦like you, I wear a hat when I travel so I donβt need to pack it. But the thrill of the hunt is always fun.
Nice! Putting in a plug here for Hatman Jack's https://www.hatmanjacks.com/ the third largest hat store in the States located right here in my Delano neighborhood of Wichita, KS.
Iβve never met anyone besides my partner (er... heβs also a subscriber here) who wears 7 7/8! good to know it didnβt disqualify you from this expedition.
I love Gammarelli socks. I had been buying them for years through the Paris socks shop Mes Chausettes Rouges (the only distributor) before I finally got to Rome for the first time in 2020.
Pardon the pedantic notes, but the pope socks arenβt red (although all the popes used to shop there before Francis and his Jesuit ways). The popes wear white. The red socks are for cardinals. Iβm also a fan of their purple socks for bishops.
Great story! So, how do you pack your hats for air travel?
I am very careful. I just wear them on board. Donβt trust the airlines to handle them.
Looking sharp! A very impressive story. ππ
Thanks!

Nice! Oregon or Maine?
Oregon
Oh man....as a hat fetishist, soooo jealous!!!!! Thanks for the story!
Sweet story Robert! I loved Rome when I visited a few years back. It is a wonderful walking city. Canβt wait to see your hat on Smith St. Enjoy!
I've been to (and bought hats at) four of the spots you mentioned. Now I need to go to Rome!
If you ever get to Cairo, go to Nasser Abd El-Baset's shop: he's the last fez maker in Egypt.
Great hat track record!
What a wonderful tale about π π©βone of my addictions, too!π

Iβll have to try Salmagundi.

Super story and writing!
Thank you!
Cool stuff!
Thanks!
You should swing by Gammarelli for some papal red socks. I think itβs just around the way from the hat shop.
I will check that out.
