White House subs were my family's gold standard in the day. The recently opened in New Orleans Francolini's Italian Deli does a very respectable and delicious Italian and many other fine sandwiches. Their slogan is "Not Everything from Jersey Sucks". When I was there, I mused that I might have died and gone to heaven.
Wonderful read! Love your histories of old time eateries and bars. Our most expensive hot dog currently is $10 so we've got a ways to go to $29. Maybe someday. LOL
I did make it to White House exactly a decade ago. Made me miss the first 20 minutes of a Hall & Oates concert. Haven't decided yet which was more important to me.
Interesting life you lead, sir! Let's go grab a fancy "hot dog" with Adam Platt....oh look! Toby is here too, not having this interesting non-Cosmo. This is why I subscribe. A window into a cooler world than I inhabit. :-)
Can't wait to try Stupak's hot dog, um, sausage! New York was definitely a hot dog town in my parents' day. There was even a ginormous Nathan's in Times Square when I was a kid. When I was growing up, the NY slice was the predominant casual street food, and hotdogs took a back seat.
Love that! My dad got all of those papers -- the NY Times, the Star Ledger, the Asbury Park Press, the AC Press, the Philadelphia Enquirer, the Home News, The Courier News and the Messenger Gazette! He loved the newspapers-- and on Sundays I loved all the different comics!
Ahaha I was not living a very culinary life in my early 20s, but most of the ones you mentioned I went to at one time or another, plus Angelo's Fairmount Tavern. I spent a good deal of time at bars like Grabel's and DeFeo's, the latter in the shadow of the former Trump Plaza...
This is so damn good, makes me wanna gas up the Pinto and haul north for the weekend
I say without reservation that the trip would be worth it!

That's hilarious. Indeed, many things from Jersey do NOT suck!

You’ll get there! 😉

That’s a toughie.

I won’t lie. That was a VERY New York afternoon.
Another city I will have to visit one day - and as someone who likes casinos I may have to read up on them.

I would have liked to have seen that Nathan’s.
My first job in journalism was as reporter at The Press of Atlantic City!

Cool. Where did you eat the most in the city?

Angelo’s is beautiful.
